Link Between Smoking & Sight Loss

The effects of smoking could soon be highlighted on cigarette packets, including infected lungs and diseased eyes.

It's part of a number of proposals for rebranding cigarette packets, with the alternative being plain white packets.

Many realise the impact smoking can have, such as causing various types of cancer, but as many are unaware of the link between smoking and sight loss.

Research has confirmed the harmful effects of smoking on eyesight, particularly in the development of age-related macular degeneration (AMD) - one of the UK's leading causes of sight loss - and cataracts.

For many, giving up smoking is very difficult.

That's why there are a number of organisations and individuals out there who are willing to help.

Insight Radio contributor, pharmacist Elizabeth Roddick, spoke to Simon Pauley about one particular way that you could use to help you give up.
