RNIB Scotland's What Would You Lose Campaign

Imagine hearing the Beatles music but having no idea what they look like, or cheering the Apollo moon-landing but never actually seeing Neil Armstrong's historic 'one small step', or applauding Chris Hoy's dazzling tally of Olympic gold medals without having been able to follow his efforts.

These are among the iconic images the Royal National Institute of Blind People Scotland is highlighting as part of a major campaign to ask people what they'd miss most if they lost their sight.

Accessible Tourism

Many people enjoy sight-seeing around the UK and the world, but how easy is it if you are blind or partially sighted?

Do the attractions have accessible information?

Do the guides understand how to describe and guide someone who is visually impaired?

Insight Radio decided to look into this and began with a visit to one of Scotland's major tourist attractions, Edinburgh Castle.

Regular guest Laura Steele donned a pair of sim specs and joined Monty Lilburn, who is blind, for a tour of the attraction.

Edinburgh Castle Part 1 - Laura and Monty have arrived at the castle and are about to start their tour, working their way through the ancient monument.  They begin by meeting their guide and finish at the 1 o'clock gun, an iconic landmark that the public don't usually get their hands on.

Edinburgh Castle Part 2 - The intrepid duo are about to get to grips with the Castle's biggest gun, Mons Meg. They'll also be glad to know that they're heading inside to get their hands on the Scottish crown jewels and swashbuckle with some swords!

Edinburgh Castle Part 3 - The tour is almost over and it's time to visit the war memorial as well as finding out what they thought of the assistance that has been put in place for blind and partially sighted visitors.

Listen out for more visits from around the UK coming soon on the Afternoon Edition.

Shared Surfaces

Say No to Shared Streets Logo from GuideDogs.org.uk

A campaign against proposed shared surfaces has taken another turn.

Sight loss charities in the Greater London area are up in arms at plans to level one of the capital's busiest streets, Exhibition Road. Councillor Andrew Lamont from the Royal London Borough of Kensington and Chelsea is arguing that the changes; including the removal of pavement kerbs, are for the best. However, Tom Pey from guide Dogs disagrees. Shared Surface Debate
